Materials:
- Natural craft sticks
- Colored craft sticks
- Dry erase board, paper/pencil, etc.
I used a total of ten craft sticks each time to represent a base ten model. The colored craft sticks are what we were naming as a fraction and a decimal.
This activity could be used at the beginning of a unit to introduce the topic OR it could easily be used in math centers in a classroom! Students could create their own model and then identify the fraction and decimal.

ReplyDeleteI think this is such a great way to teach students how to do fractions in math! I have heard of and used the pizza fractions technique so many times, but realized that only some students fully understand this topic using the pizza technique. Using these colored sticks helps the students see what a fraction is and make that connection between the numerator and the denominator.

ReplyDeleteMy students were struggling immensely with fractions and decimals. I researched for a while before coming upon your post and this activity. The materials were cheap and easy to obtain. The concept was much easier for my students to understand with the colors of sticks and being able to do something hands-on. I did it as a whole group and then as a small group.
