Blog Hoppin': Teacher Talk Tuesday

I'm excited to be sharing my advice to new teachers through Teacher Talk Tuesday! I am linking up with Blog Hoppin'! I'm so excited for teacher week! I love all of the wonderful ideas you get through blogging! Here are some pieces of advice I've learned over the past few years.
  • Stay in contact with the parents throughout the school year, not just at conferences and Meet the Teacher Night. Let them know that all of you are a team and must work together for the success of their child. Get them on your side! Also, don't only contact if there is a problem. Send home positive notes or make positive phone calls. They make such a difference.

  • Don't try to do too much too soon. Sometimes it can get overwhelming when SO many new programs/initiatives/ideas are floating around, but take your time so that YOU don't get overwhelmed!

  • Make time for YOU that is not school related!

  • It will be obvious what teachers are there because they want to make a difference versus those whose heart just isn't in it anymore. Surround yourself with positive people and be leary of those who are always negative.

  • Classroom management is the one thing I think can make or break you that first year. I had a college professor tell me "Go in firm. You can always lighten up once procedures and routines are established. If you go in too easy, you will get taken advantage of and it is MUCH harder to try to be firm halfway through the school year." That is SO true!
  • Document everything. The amount of paperwork can be so over-whelming, but keep it as organized as possible and document everything! I write down every single time I speak to a parent (date, type of contact [phone, meeting, etc.], and parent response). For student's with IEP's, keep notes and records. For student's with behavioral plans (if your school does that), keep notes of everything. It will seem overwhelming, but it will only cover you if there is ever any trouble!
  • When you have a bad day and if you ever doubt yourself and wonder if it's worth it, know that it is and remember why you chose this profession!! :)

  1. Great advice! Especially about not doing too much all at once! It's so hard with so many great ideas out there, but it's so easy to get overwhelmed! Cute blog--I'm a new follower!

  3. This is great advice on classroom management. I agree it is important to build positive relationships with parents from the start. I also like how you stated to "Go Firm" at first when creating classroom management rules/expectations. It is important for teachers to set the tone from day one. The one thing you touched is documenting everything. This is crucial when it comes to teaching...you need to have documentation in case something happens.
