Fiction Friday & Currently

Happy Friday, y'all!  Today I am linking up for 2 things: Fiction Friday and Farley's August Currently!
The first book I read this week was Lyddie by Katherine Peterson. I had heard this book would fit in nicely with our Social Studies standards so I wanted to read it this summer before school starts. It will be a great read aloud during our Industrial Revolution unit.  I also watched the movie and have ordered it as well.

Lyddie summary:
Her parents are gone, and her brother and sisters sent to live with other people. Lyddie Worthen is on her own. When Lyddie hears about the mill jobs in Lowell, Massachusetts, she heads there with the goal of earning enough money to reunite her family. Six days a week from dawn to dusk Lyddie and the other girls run weaving looms in the murky dust - and lint-filled factory. Lyddie learns to read - and to handle the menacing overseer. But when the working conditions begin to affect her friends' health, she has to make a choice. Will she speak up for better working conditions and risk her job - and her dream? Or will she stay quiet until it is perhaps too late?

The next book I read this week is Journey to Topaz, another book that will fit in nicely with my Social Studies standards.  The author of this text is Yoshiko Uchida.  She has another book called Journey Home, which I will be reading soon.

Journey to Home summary:
Based on Yoshiko Uchida's personal experiences, this is the moving story of one girl's struggle to remain brave during the Japanese internment of World War II. In a bleak and dusty prison camp, eleven-year-old Yuki and her family experience both true friendship and heart-wrenching tragedy. Journey to Topaz explores the consequences of prejudice and the capacities of the human spirit. First published in 1971, this book is now a much loved and widely read classic.

Next, I'm linking up with Farley's Currently.  I can hardly believe it is August!

Listening:  I love Young & the Restless and have watched it for years!  My great-grandma always had to watch her "program" when she took care of us during the day and she got me hooked at a young age!

Loving:  I bought GoGurt (yogurt) for my son and it's my favorite snack!  I like it better frozen though.  Yumm!

Thinking: Grocery Store...blah!

Wanting: Now that it is August and I only have a week left, I am wanting to soak up every minute that's left of summer!

Needing: I am hoping to finish my long range plans soon.  We have a new template we are supposed to use so I'm having to change everything.  :/

B2S must haves:
1)  Planner - Beginning of school is so busy so I must have a planner to keep track of everything.
2) Organized teacher bag - This is on my to-do list!
3) New pens & Sharpies - Flair pens are a must, as well as new Sharpie's! :)

  1. How funny about getting hooked to Y&R so young! I remember watching Days of our Lives when I was little but haven't watched it since. I actually just bought some more flair pens today. They're the best!! How old is your little man?

  2. Yay! I'm so glad you read Lyddie. Did you like it? From your summary, some of it came back to me, but I think I still just remember my emotional response to the book. How have I never heard of Journey to Topaz?! It sounds powerful! Thanks for linking up!!

P.S. Flair pens are my favorite too!!

  3. I remember reading Lyddie when I was in elementary school. I couldn't recite the story line to you, but it means something that it stands out in my mind. Great book recommendation :)

I'm looking forward to getting to know you through your posts!
