Fiction Friday - The Watson Go To Birmingham

I am a little late linking up with Amanda's Fiction Friday, but better late than never, right?!
This week I read another text by Christopher Paul Curtis titled "The Watsons go to Birmingham - 1963".  Below is a summary I found:

The Watsons are a loving, funny family who live in Flint, Michigan in the early 1960's. When the oldest brother, Byron, continues down the path to trouble, his parents decide to take him to stay with his strict grandmother in Birmingham, Alabama. The entire family goes on the long car trip, and while they are in Birmingham, a church is bombed, killing several children. Kenny, the middle child, is traumatized by what he sees, and takes a while to recover, with the help of his big brother, Byron.
I have to admit that this wasn't my favorite book, but I did like it.  I thought it took a while to get to the historical part of the text, but I enjoyed reading the silly adventures of the Watson family.  This will be a text that I will definitely use as a class read aloud to connect to Social Studies.

Come back this week for posts linking up with Teacher Week '13!

  1. Hello. I haven't read this book, but I enjoy Christopher Paul Curtis' book "Bud, Not Buddy." I'm excited that we've put it on our required reading list this year. The September Scholastic Book Club (Tab Edition) has "The Watsons Go To Birmingham" as the $1.00 book. I always try to buy a few of the $1.00 books for my classroom library. Thanks for the review.

    1. Oh that's good to know!! I will definitely be purchasing a couple extra for that price! Thanks!

  2. The Watson's go to Birmingham is an excellent book and always brings tears to my eyes!

I'm also looking forward to the rest of your posts this week with that linky party! Aren't you the ambitious one!?!?

  3. I do like the opening of this post – I think you are good at writing fiction. I will definitely read the whole post, once I have dealt with my dissertation problem. I am looking for a website where I can buy dissertation service – as soon as I have found one and placed my order, I will be back here to read this post. I might check out your other posts as well.
